Artist Statement
I am an artist strongly influenced by Chinese landscape paintings as well as French Impressionism. A Chinese native who has long-lived in the West, I revel in the intersections between cultures. I seek to reconcile these influences in my own paintings through composition, color, and brushwork.
Though my subjects may vary from cloud and stream, to rock and mountain, to tree and statue, I aim to unify my paintings through high-chroma color and deliberate brush strokes. My compositions often incorporate large areas of open space as a balance to denser areas, an homage to the Eastern art of my youth.
I draw inspiration from my travels across the globe. Travel excites me, particularly the opportunity it gives to witness many of the earth’s grandest natural spectacles, from majestic mountains to glimpses of awe inspiring sunsets, to the simplicity of a muddy stream after a storm. I also find intrigue in architecture and sculpture that speak to man's influence on design and legacy. Man and nature, sky and earth, light and shadow, presence and absence--it is the balance between opposing elements that I love to explore in my work.
Cythia grew up in Taipei, Taiwan and moved to the USA in her twenties to attend graduate school. She was an only child and her leisure time was spent with pencils, inks, brushes, and books. Her father taught her calligraphy and during her college days she practiced Chinese landscape and flower/bird ink brush paintings. After getting her degree, she started her career in the States, married, and had two daughters. Her life became devoted to work and family, but after retirement she picked up her brushes again and registered in the three year Compass Atelier Master Artist Program. In there, she received instructions that took her art from rudimentary to the professional level.
